Little Lad
This tale is one that has touched us deeply, and broke our hearts. This
is a tale about a dog we could not help, to give you an idea of how frustrating
rescue can be, how quickly the novelty of a puppy can fade, and that not
every tale ends with a happy wag.
We never learned his name. We called him Little Lad. Late one
Thursday afternoon, we heard through a friend of a friend that there was
a young (~ 9 mos. old) neutered male Golden Retreiver, obedience trained,
housebroken, crate trained, raised with young children, whose owners were
going to have him euthanized if someone didn't take him by 5:00 p.m. Friday.
The reason being that they were leaving for the weekend on a camping trip
and no longer wanted the dog anyway. The woman ran an in-home daycare and
he was too boisterous with the children. He was but a pup himself. Draw
your own conclusion.
After a number of phone calls, we'd figured out where we could put
him, who could go get him, and what we would do with him once he arrived.
Early Friday morning, attempts to contact the owners were made. It was
then that we learned he'd been brought to the vet clinic the evening before
and euthanized. A call to the vet clinic confirmed that he was gone. In
our hearts, he is still called Little Lad...we hope he has lots of
friends at Rainbow Bridge where he shall play forever. |
